Jane Bunnett’s Maqueque
is an Upbeat & Energetic All-Female, Cuban Sextet

This exciting, energetic, all-female, Cuban sextet, founded by saxophonist-flutist Bunnett, has earned 2 Grammy-nominations and won 5 JUNO awards for their incredible talent. Bunnett has been deeply dedicated to the music of Cuba for the past 3 decades, melding her modern jazz roots with traditional and contemporary Cuban forms. Maqueque (pronounced “Mah-Keh-Keh”), currently includes Yissy Garcia (drums), Dánae Olano (vocals, piano), Magdelys Savigne (vocals, batá drums, congas); Elizabeth Rodriguez (vocals, violin), and Celia Jiménez (vocals, bass). Maqueque’s debut CD was awarded a much deserved Juno Award – Canada’s version of the Grammys – for “Best Group Jazz Album of the Year.” (2014). Not surprisingly, the band’s energy and enthusiasm and at their lives shows is contagious, and their smiles and lively attitudes speak to their love of performing. Maqueque’s fresh, inventive, music earned the group a standing ovation at the Kennedy Center, a rare encore at the Chicago Jazz Festival, and four sold out nights at Chicago’s legendary Jazz Showcase. And now, 30 years later, Bunnett continues her quest to seek out and present musical talent unheard beyond the confines of the island. She considers Maqueque to be the newest and the freshest “Spirits of Havana.” Come experience this musical, cultural journey for yourself! “This all female sextet showcases some of the brightest young instrumental and vocal talent Cuba has to offer!” -Jazztimes “This band of young killer female musicians play like seasoned veterans. The music is a real treat!” – Downbeat
