Synopsis
Montreal, 1957. Michel Paquette, 12 years old, skips Sunday mass to go to the Saint-Amour et Fille publishing house, where he immerses himself in the latest poetry collections published by Archange and his daughter, Rose.
Charlotte, Archange’s granddaughter and Michel’s friend, eagerly distributes the pamphlet Vive le Québec Laïque, written by her grandfather, in class with the support of their anarchist teacher, André Rochette. This pamphlet enrages Vicar Cotnoir, the spiritual director of the students at Saint-Eusèbe de la Mélasse school.
The Church retaliates; the Cardinal Madore Zouaves demolishes the publishing house presses, and Rochette is dismissed. Michel and his friends take revenge against Vicar Cotnoir, whose actions towards children are questionable.
With the help of Le Matou, a mysterious and fantastical character, Michel’s grandmother, Délima Paquette, brings the neighborhood together around her meatball stew, infusing a touch of madness where gloom was threatening to take hold.
